How to Score 79 in PTE: Advanced Accuracy Plan

Learn how to score 79 in PTE by finding hidden error patterns, improving language control, checking timed performance and using mock tests wisely.

A PTE 79 target calls for high accuracy that survives unfamiliar prompts and full-test pressure. The most useful preparation is not more repetition by itself. It is finding the small error patterns that keep one skill below the requirement.

Start with the accepting body’s exact rule

Confirm whether 79 is required overall, in every communicative skill or in selected skills. Record the exact PTE product and validity requirement too. The overall score is not the arithmetic average of the four skill results, so plan against the score-report fields the organization actually names.

Is 79 still Australia’s Superior English requirement?

Not for a newly taken test. For PTE Academic taken on or after 7 August 2025, Home Affairs’ Superior English rule requires at least:

Skill Current minimum
Listening 69
Reading 70
Writing 85
Speaking 88

A score of 79 in each skill would not meet the Writing or Speaking requirements. Flat 79 thresholds apply to the older test-date category, subject to visa and validity rules. See the Australia route guide before setting a target. A university’s separate 79 requirement remains whatever that university actually publishes; a visa table does not replace it.

Audit hidden losses, not only visible mistakes

At this target, weaknesses can be subtle. Review recordings for omitted endings, uneven stress, rushed phrasing and repeated fillers. Review writing for imprecise claims, weak paragraph logic, article errors and collocations that are grammatically possible but unnatural. In reading and listening tasks, record confident wrong answers and lucky correct guesses.

Create an error log with five fields: task, observed error, probable cause, correction rule and next retest date. An error is not resolved until the correction works on a new prompt.

Practise precision without inventing a mark budget

There is no reliable public rule that “one mistake costs three overall points” or that a fixed accuracy percentage guarantees 79. Tasks have different criteria and their raw marks are not the reported 10–90 scale. Use the current Academic scoring guide, not a private conversion formula.

Separate three kinds of near miss: the meaning was distorted, the form/instruction was wrong, or delivery made the answer unclear. Fixing spelling will not repair a wrong conclusion; speaking faster will not add omitted content.

Develop flexible speaking performance

Use three passes for recorded responses:

  1. Meaning pass: Did the answer keep or explain the important information?
  2. Delivery pass: Was speech continuous, easy to understand and naturally phrased?
  3. Accuracy pass: Which sounds, word endings or stress choices reduced clarity?

For Summarize Group Discussion, identify who agrees, disagrees or qualifies an idea rather than listing three unrelated points. For Respond to a Situation, check that your request, register and proposed action fit the situation. These current Academic tasks cannot be replaced by only drilling familiar Read Aloud prompts.

Practise with unfamiliar topics and visuals. A rehearsed structure can reduce planning load. But fixed sentences should never crowd out relevant content.

Make your writing more correct

High-scoring writing needs control at several levels. Outline the central claim, give each paragraph one job, connect evidence logically and leave time for a systematic edit. Build a personal checklist from real errors rather than a generic list.

Editing pass Question
Relevance Did every paragraph answer the prompt?
Structure Can the reader follow the argument without guessing?
Sentence control Are clauses complete and punctuation purposeful?
Word choice Are collocations accurate and sufficiently exact?
Form Does the response satisfy the task’s formal limits?

Original example: retain the limit on the claim

Source idea for this teaching exercise: “The pilot programme cut electricity use in two buildings during winter, but the researchers have not tested its effect in summer.”

Weak summary: “The programme reduces electricity use in every season.”

Better summary: “The winter pilot reduced electricity use in two buildings; its summer effect has not been tested.”

The repair is not a rarer synonym. It preserves scale, season and uncertainty. On an actual Academic written-summary task, also obey the one-sentence and word-count instructions; this short exercise isolates meaning, not an official scored response. Apply the same caution to essays: do not claim that one example proves a universal result.

Improve answers based on reading and listening clues

Go beyond matching words. In reading, identify the author’s claim, function of each paragraph and reference chains. In listening, tell apart a speaker’s main position from examples, reservations and corrections. After practice, explain why each wrong option is wrong. This exposes reasoning gaps that an answer key alone hides.

A precise Listening review

Original teaching contrast: “The committee considered closing the branch but decided to reduce its opening hours.” An option saying the branch will close reports the rejected idea, not the decision. In review, mark the turning word and the final action. Do not select by the memorable word “closing.” Use Listening multiple-choice practice for a complete worked example.

For dictation, keep exact wording instead: a synonym that would work in a summary does not transcribe the spoken word. Precision depends on the required output.

Use a 79-focused weekly schedule

This schedule is an editorial example; it does not establish a number of weeks needed for 79.

  • Two careful practice sessions: small sets, full review and an immediate second try.
  • Two transfer sessions: apply the repaired skill to unfamiliar prompts.
  • One timed-section rehearsal: practise timing and task switching.
  • One full-test or review session: alternate full mocks with comprehensive error-log work.
  • One recovery period: light English exposure or rest.

If a full test produces no new decision about training, another immediate mock is unlikely to help.

Common mistakes at an advanced target

  • Increasing speed until pronunciation or understanding deteriorates.
  • Treating sophisticated vocabulary as a replacement for exact meaning.
  • Reusing the same practice prompts until recall masks ability.
  • Ignoring a skill score minimum because the overall result looks strong.
  • Changing a stable method based on one anomalous mock.
  • Assuming an online predicted score will copy official test conditions.

Do not overcorrect a stable method after one mock

Compare recent results in the same product under comparable conditions. If one fresh attempt is lower, inspect timing, recording quality and the error log before replacing your whole approach. If the same required skill is repeatedly below its threshold, act on that pattern instead of dismissing every result as a bad day.

The mock-test review method separates a score indicator from a guarantee. A maximum-looking third-party score or a memorised repeat is not sufficient evidence for an advanced target.

Prove readiness with stability

Use more than one current-format timed result, separated by targeted repair. Check the spread between attempts and between skills. Readiness is stronger when every required skill score repeatedly meets the required score, task timing is controlled and an unfamiliar prompt does not cause a collapse.

Frequently asked questions

Can I guarantee a PTE 79 with a template?

No. A template cannot guarantee relevant content, accurate language, understanding, pronunciation or consistent test-day performance.

Should I practise only tasks that test more than one skill for 79?

No. Tasks that test more than one skill matter. But every required skill score and recurring error needs attention. Use official rules rather than an unofficial scoring shortcut.

How much above 79 should I score in practice?

There is no official universal buffer. Look for repeatable performance above every application minimum and treat practice scores as indicators.

Conclusion

Working toward PTE 79 requires careful and correct work. Stay on topic, study small errors that happen again and use what you learn on new material. Use timed tests to check if you can repeat your result. No plan can promise a score, but your own results can help you make better study choices.
