PTE for the UK: visas, university study and SELT rules
Start with the application, not the label “UK PTE.” Academic, Academic UKVI and Home serve different evidence needs. A university admission requirement, a visa English requirement and a later settlement requirement are not the same decision.

Academic, Academic UKVI or PTE Home?
PTE Academic
For admission where the institution accepts it and a separate SELT booking is not required. Confirm the exact course and sponsor instructions.
Academic format and scoringPTE Academic UKVI
The four-skills Pearson SELT. It shares Academic content, format and scoring, but provides the SELT reference needed for relevant immigration applications.
Academic UKVI requirementsPTE Home
Separate speaking-and-listening tests at A1, A2 and B1. Choose the level required by the specific family, citizenship or qualifying settlement application.
Home levels and formatDo not choose Core for a UK requirement because it is accepted for Canadian immigration. The name, assessed skills, approved delivery and evidence reference all matter.

What a SELT requirement actually means
A Secure English Language Test must meet the Home Office’s approved-test arrangements. GOV.UK lists Pearson’s Academic UKVI and Home options; both the test and its location must be approved. An ordinary test-centre listing or an institution’s acceptance of Academic does not establish SELT approval.
First check whether the route requires a test at all. Qualifications, accepted previous evidence and exemptions can affect the answer. If your case is unclear, ask the relevant authority or a qualified adviser rather than purchasing an exam simply because a general country guide recommends it.

Keep a record of the rule you are meeting
Write down the route, application date, required skills, CEFR level, accepted test and result-age rule. This turns a broad “PTE accepted” claim into a requirement you can actually compare with your booking.
UK visa levels and PTE scores
CEFR means Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. These are common test-based evidence patterns checked on 28 October 2026, not complete visa eligibility criteria. Permitted alternatives and exemptions must be checked separately.
| Application | English requirement | Pearson test-based option |
|---|---|---|
| First partner or parent family visa | At least A1 speaking and listening | Home A1, or an accepted higher-level test |
| Relevant 2.5-year family extension following A1 | At least A2 speaking and listening | Home A2, or accepted higher-level evidence |
| Student: below degree level | B1 in four skills | Academic UKVI: 43 or more in each skill |
| Student: degree level or above, where a SELT is required | B2 in four skills | Academic UKVI: 59 or more in each skill |
| Skilled Worker: new applications and most switches | B2 in four skills | Academic UKVI: 59 or more in each skill |
| Settlement where the applicable current test requirement is B1 | B1 speaking and listening | Home B1; check the March 2027 boundary below |
| Citizenship where an English test is required | At least B1 speaking and listening under current guidance | Home B1; check accepted previous evidence separately |
GOV.UK determines the required level. Pearson’s UK visa table supplies the 43-per-skill B1 and 59-per-skill B2 score thresholds. Do not replace a per-skill requirement with the overall result.
Skilled Worker: the 8 January 2026 distinction
Current Skilled Worker guidance requires B2 for new applications and switches from other visas. If you had this visa before 8 January 2026 and are extending or updating it, the page says B1 applies and English does not need to be proved again. It also gives a separate provision for a switch from Health and Care Worker. Check your actual permission history; an old blanket B1 recommendation is not safe for a new application.
The UK study and work purpose guide helps organise these choices; the study/work official-check page lists the evidence to confirm before booking.

Settlement: a published change from 26 March 2027
Appendix KoLL explicitly distinguishes applications before 26 March 2027 from those on or after that date: its test-based speaking-and-listening threshold rises from B1 to B2. Other route-specific rules, including Appendix Settlement Family Life, also contain the dated B2 requirement.
PTE Home stops at B1. Do not book Home B1 as evidence for a B2 requirement. Check the exact settlement route, permitted prior evidence, exemptions and approved test options for your application date. Do not assume a general B1 overview overrides a dated Immigration Rule.
Citizenship is a separate application. Do not automatically transfer a settlement change to citizenship or assume a prior Home pass completes either application. Use the family and settlement guide and route-and-level checklist for the relevant official links.

UK university admission and Student visa evidence
Student guidance requires B1 below degree level and B2 at degree level or above. For degree-level study or above, a Higher Education Provider can assess English itself and request a different test, while still establishing the required B2 level.
That provision does not mean every institution accepts every PTE product. Check the specific course page, your offer and the sponsor’s instructions. Ask whether standard Academic is accepted for your circumstances or whether you need Academic UKVI.
Worked example: course acceptance is not the whole check
Suppose a course accepts Academic and specifies an overall result plus individual skill minimums. First compare all those numbers with your report. Then ask the sponsor how English will be evidenced for your Student application. Neither a general “PTE accepted” logo nor meeting a visa minimum establishes that the course’s own conditions are satisfied.
Save the written answer with the course name and intake. This is more useful than a generic university score list that omits program-specific requirements.
Booking in India or the UK
Search the exact product and approved appointment in Pearson’s booking system. If testing in India, use the India centre guide; if testing in the UK, use the UK centre guide. Not every location offers every product or level.
Follow the booking and change rules and Pearson’s product-specific ID policy. A valid passport is accepted for SELT testing in any country, while other accepted options depend on the document and testing location. Do not assume standard Academic and UK SELT ID lists are identical.

SELT results, references and older evidence
GOV.UK’s general SELT guidance requires a result awarded within the two years before the application and tells applicants to enter Pearson’s SELT URN for electronic verification. Read the reference from the actual result, not the booking confirmation. The results guide explains Pearson account access and sharing.
Previous-evidence provisions can be different from that general window. Family guidance explains higher-level result reuse for extensions. Settlement and citizenship guidance gives different conditions for qualifications whose normal validity has expired. Reuse must also meet the level and rules applicable to the actual application date; a previous B1 pass does not become B2.
Frequently asked questions
Does everyone applying to the UK need Academic UKVI?
No. The route, required skills and permitted evidence determine that. Some university applicants use standard Academic; relevant two-skill requirements have Home options.
Can Home B1 meet a four-skills B1 requirement?
No. Home does not supply reading and writing evidence. Matching the level alone is not enough.
Is an overall UKVI score of 65 enough for B2?
Not if any required skill is below 59. Compare each of the four scores with the relevant threshold, and check any higher course requirement.
Can an approved overseas SELT be used for an application made in the UK?
GOV.UK permits this, subject to approved test/location and the other applicable evidence rules. Testing abroad does not remove the need to check those conditions.
