PTE for Canada: Core for immigration, Academic for study
The correct PTE test depends on what you are applying for—not simply the country. Use PTE Core for Express Entry. For admission to a Canadian university or college that accepts Pearson results, check its PTE Academic requirement. A later work-permit application is a separate check.

PTE Core for Express Entry and Canadian PR
IRCC’s Express Entry language guidance explicitly accepts PTE Core, not PTE Academic. The English minimum depends on the program and, for the Canadian Experience Class, the job’s NOC TEER classification.
| Express Entry program | Minimum English level |
|---|---|
| Federal Skilled Worker: first official language | CLB 7 in all four abilities |
| Canadian Experience Class: TEER 0 or 1 | CLB 7 in all four abilities |
| Canadian Experience Class: TEER 2 or 3 | CLB 5 in all four abilities |
| Federal Skilled Trades | CLB 5 in speaking and listening; CLB 4 in reading and writing |
These are language minimums, not complete eligibility criteria or guaranteed invitation scores. A provincial nomination or another immigration stream must be checked under its own rules. Use our IRCC evidence checklist to record the exact program and required documents.
The PTE Core test guide explains its everyday-English tasks, including Write Email. Core is not just Academic with a different score report: use the correct preparation materials.

How to convert PTE Core scores to CLB
Read the Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking results from your report, then find the matching range for each one. Do not convert the overall score, average the four CLB levels or use an Academic-to-IELTS chart.
For a CLB 9 target in every ability, the entry thresholds are Listening 82, Reading 78, Writing 88 and Speaking 84. The different numbers are intentional: each ability has its own conversion range.
PTE Core to CLB table
IRCC assesses each ability separately. Your overall PTE Core score cannot replace the four component scores.
| CLB | Reading | Writing | Listening | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10+ | 88–90 | 90 | 89–90 | 89–90 |
| 9 | 78–87 | 88–89 | 82–88 | 84–88 |
| 8 | 69–77 | 79–87 | 71–81 | 76–83 |
| 7 | 60–68 | 69–78 | 60–70 | 68–75 |
| 6 | 51–59 | 60–68 | 50–59 | 59–67 |
| 5 | 42–50 | 51–59 | 39–49 | 51–58 |
| 4 | 33–41 | 41–50 | 28–38 | 42–50 |
| 3 | 24–32 | 32–40 | 18–27 | 34–41 |
Sources checked 28 October 2026: IRCC’s Express Entry table (CLB 4–10+) and Pearson’s 2026 Core Score Guide (including CLB 3). A conversion level is not a program eligibility decision. Check IRCC before applying.
Worked example: why “CLB 9 overall” is misleading
Imagine a Core report with Listening 83, Reading 80, Writing 87 and Speaking 85. In the table, listening, reading and speaking are CLB 9; writing is CLB 8. The result is not CLB 9 in every ability. A higher score in listening does not compensate for writing below 88.
If your preparation target is CLB 9 throughout, write four separate targets on your study plan and review the skill below target. Meeting a program’s minimum and maximising Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points are different goals. This example checks conversion only; it does not calculate CRS or assess PR eligibility.
The Core-to-CLB reference table can help check a report, but IRCC’s current table remains the authority.
PTE Academic for university and college admission
Pearson directs Canadian university and college applicants to PTE Academic rather than Core. Acceptance is institution-specific. There is no reliable universal “PTE score for Canada study” that replaces the exact course requirement.
- Find the institution’s English-language admissions page and the specific program page.
- Check the test name, overall score, every skill minimum and any restrictions on test delivery.
- Confirm the campus, qualification level, intake and accepted result age.
- If the pages conflict, ask admissions for written clarification before paying for a test.
For example, if a course asks for an overall result plus a minimum in each skill, meeting only the overall number is insufficient. Save the requirement with the date you checked it so you can compare your report accurately.
A course offer is not study-permit approval. Use IRCC’s study-permit document guidance for the immigration stage rather than treating an admissions score as the entire visa checklist.
Planning a post-graduation work permit?
Do not assume the Academic result used for admission will satisfy a later PGWP language requirement. IRCC’s PGWP document guidance lists PTE Core. For applications from 1 November 2024, language evidence is required except for graduates of eligible flight schools; required proof must be included even if the upload checklist labels it optional.
The current program-based PGWP rules specify CLB 7 in all four English abilities for bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral and other university programs; other college, polytechnic and non-university programs require CLB 5 in all four. Other eligibility and, where applicable, field-of-study conditions still apply. This is a test-selection distinction, not a complete PGWP assessment.

Result validity and entering report details
For Express Entry, results must be less than two years old both when completing the profile and when submitting the PR application. Count from the test date. An invitation does not freeze the result’s age. For PGWP language evidence, IRCC also requires results less than two years old at application.
Before submitting, compare the dates against the relevant deadline. If expiry is approaching, plan around the actual application stage instead of assuming a visible score report must still be acceptable.
Copy the test name, date, four ability scores and requested report identifiers exactly from the official result and application instructions. A booking reference is not automatically the result identifier an immigration form requires. Our results and sharing guide explains access and verification; it cannot submit an immigration application for you.
Taking PTE for Canada from India or in Canada
Choose where you will sit the test separately from where you will use it. Pearson’s Core FAQ confirms it is a test-centre exam, not an at-home online test. Use the India centre guide or Canada centre guide to check the exact product and live location.
Fees follow the testing location, so do not use a Canadian price to budget for an Indian appointment. The India guide covers local fee and ID planning. Follow the booking checklist for account details, original identification and change rules. Leave room for result processing and another attempt before your application deadline.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use PTE Academic for Express Entry?
No. IRCC specifies the Core option. Academic admission acceptance does not transfer to Express Entry.
Does CLB 9 guarantee Canadian PR?
No. It is a language level, not an invitation or approval. Your immigration program and wider application determine the other requirements.
Can one PTE result cover admission and PGWP?
Do not assume so. A school’s Academic requirement and IRCC’s Core option for PGWP evidence are different. Check both stages and their dates.
Must I travel to Canada to take Core?
No. Search Pearson’s available Core appointments in India if you plan to test there. Verify the product, centre, ID and appointment before paying.
