PTE Academic: format, scoring and preparation
PTE Academic is Pearson’s centre-based academic English test. It assesses speaking, writing, reading and listening, with an overall result and separate skill scores on a 10–90 scale. Use it for an application only when the receiving institution or authority accepts the standard Academic product.

Who should take PTE Academic?
It is used for academic admission where accepted, and for listed visa, migration and professional purposes. Find the institution with Pearson’s acceptance finder, then check its own course and intake requirements. Acceptance at university level does not establish every course’s score threshold.
For Australia, check the visa subclass separately from the university. For Canadian Express Entry, the Pearson product is PTE Core, not Academic. For a UK application requiring a four-skill SELT, use PTE Academic UKVI. Standard Academic acceptance by a university is not evidence that a SELT requirement has been met.
The global study and Australia route helps you organise the purpose. Its institution and visa authority checklist helps you confirm the actual requirements.
The three parts of the current test
Pearson’s current format has nine Speaking & Writing question types, five Reading types and eight Listening types. The unscored personal introduction is separate from these tasks. Old preparation material that omits the newer speaking tasks does not cover the full format.
Academic and Academic UKVI share the test format. The ranges below come from Pearson’s section pages; follow the timer and instructions on your actual test. Leave additional time for centre arrival and identity checks rather than treating a section range as your whole visit.

Speaking & Writing: 76–84 minutes
Record spoken responses and type summaries or an essay. Some prompts combine listening or reading with your response.
Open a task guide for its instructions, practice method and common errors:
Reading: 23–30 minutes
Work with academic passages, gaps, multiple-choice questions and paragraph order. Manage the section timer rather than giving every question identical time.
Open a task guide for its instructions, practice method and common errors:
Listening: 31–39 minutes
Understand recorded information and select, correct, summarise or transcribe it. Read the prompt carefully: a summary and an exact dictation require different responses.

How scoring affects your preparation
The overall result is not a simple average of the four reported skills. Questions contribute according to the scoring model. Use Pearson’s scoring page and linked score guide for current criteria instead of an unofficial calculator that promises to reproduce your result.
Different tasks use different rules. Some objectively scored questions use right/wrong or partial credit; some multiple-answer tasks deduct points for incorrect selections. Spoken and written responses can be assessed for content and other task-specific traits. Do not assume a trick that works for one task transfers to another.
Pearson uses automated scoring and human expert review for specified response criteria. You do not have a live speaking interview, but that does not mean every response is assessed without any human involvement.
For practice, separate content errors from delivery errors. An image description can sound fluent while missing the main comparison. A spoken summary can contain the right topic but omit the speakers’ relationships. Work on the actual missing skill, not only the recording’s length.
Booking in India and receiving your result
Choose PTE Academic in myPTE, match the accepted identity document, and check the current India price and appointments in Pearson’s live finder. Confirm the product, address, time and ID before paying. Our booking guide covers the process without claiming live seats.
Pearson says results are typically available within 48 hours; that is not a guaranteed deadline for every test. Check your myPTE account and Pearson’s support instructions if a result takes longer. Do not book against an application deadline assuming the fastest advertised turnaround.
Results can be shared digitally at no charge. Follow the institution’s instructions for the Score Report Code or myPTE assignment; a PDF attachment alone may not complete its verification process. Pearson’s normal result validity and a government’s permitted evidence timeframe are separate checks.
Use the results guide for sharing and validity, and the India centre guide to plan the visit.

A preparation routine based on your weaknesses
- Record your target. List the overall and each skill minimum from the receiving authority.
- Try the current format. Use an appropriate diagnostic or practice test and note tasks you do not yet understand.
- Keep an error log. Record the error, its cause, a correction and a fresh task that tests the same skill.
- Practise the correction. For missed dictation endings, work on hearing and writing final sounds; for weak summaries, work on selecting and connecting the main ideas.
- Retest on unseen material. Repeating a familiar answer can disguise a weakness. Check whether the correction transfers.
Our study-plan guide explains how to organise this work. Use Pearson’s free and paid resources as a format reference. A third-party practice score is not an official PTE result or an admission guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
Do I speak to a human examiner?
No live interview is used. You speak into the centre’s microphone and record responses. Pearson’s scoring process can still include human expert review of specified criteria.
Can a high overall result cover a low skill score?
Not when the receiving authority requires a minimum in that skill. Compare your report with every stated condition, not only the overall number.
Should I use an old-format mock test?
It can practise individual language skills, but it should not be your only test-readiness check. Confirm that your timed practice includes the current tasks and instructions.
Can Academic preparation help with UKVI?
Yes, the academic format is shared. Keep the booking and result requirements separate: a UKVI application requiring a SELT needs the correct approved product and reference.
