UK four-skills Secure English Language Test

PTE Academic UKVI: scores, format and booking

PTE Academic UKVI is Pearson’s four-skills Secure English Language Test (SELT). It has the same content, format and scoring as PTE Academic, with a SELT Unique Reference Number for a UK application that requires secure test evidence.

Who needs Academic UKVI rather than standard Academic?

If your application requires an approved four-skills SELT and you choose Pearson, book PTE Academic UKVI. A standard PTE Academic appointment is not the same SELT booking, even though the academic test content is shared.

Not every UK applicant needs a new test. Permitted qualifications, previous evidence or exemptions can change the evidence requirement. For study, a Higher Education Provider can assess English itself for degree-level study or above under the conditions in GOV.UK guidance. That is why “everyone going to the UK must book UKVI” is not accurate.

Use the UK study and work purpose guide to identify the route, then the official-check checklist to confirm the evidence. If you need speaking and listening only for a family or settlement route, read PTE Home instead.

Both the test and the location must be approved

GOV.UK lists approved tests separately from approved test locations. A centre offering PTE Academic is not automatically evidence that the UKVI product is available there. Check the SELT list and the exact product shown in Pearson’s booking system.

Academic UKVI vs Academic: what changes?

The English questions, task format and 10–90 score scale are the same. UKVI is not an easier syllabus, a separate essay marking standard or a shortcut to a visa. The relevant difference is the secure test product and its verifiable SELT result reference.

For preparation, use the Academic format and preparation guide for the current 22-task syllabus. It includes Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation; old seven-task speaking-and-writing lists are incomplete.

UKVI scores: use the required result in every skill

CEFR is the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Pearson’s UK visa table gives these four-skill thresholds. They are evidence thresholds, not a universal university admission policy.

Required CEFR levelPTE Academic UKVI score
B1At least 43 in each of reading, writing, speaking and listening
B2At least 59 in each of reading, writing, speaking and listening

An overall score of 65 with Writing 58 does not meet a requirement of 59 in every skill. This illustrative example shows why checking only the overall result is unsafe.

Current route examples—not one score for the whole UK

Student guidance specifies B1 below degree level and B2 at degree level or above, with the Higher Education Provider assessment provision noted above. The course can still set a higher admission threshold.

Current Skilled Worker guidance generally requires B2. It contains specific provisions for people who had the visa before 8 January 2026 and are extending or updating it, and for some switches. Do not apply an old blanket B1 claim to a new application.

Read the rule for your exact application date and history. PTE Karo explains the test and points you to official rules; it does not decide whether an exemption or transitional provision applies to your case.

How to book the correct UKVI appointment

  1. Confirm your evidence requirement and target skill scores. Students should check the offer and CAS instructions with their sponsor.
  2. Select PTE Academic UKVI in Pearson’s booking service, not just a result containing the word “Academic.”
  3. Check the approved location, live fee, appointment and accepted ID before payment.
  4. Match the booking details to your ID, then review the confirmation for product, date, time and location.

For an Indian applicant testing in India, prepare the original valid passport and follow Pearson’s current SELT identification policy. A phone image or photocopy is not the original document. For an unusual ID situation, resolve it with official support before booking.

Our booking and test-day guide covers the practical sequence. The India centre guide helps you begin the live location check without promising a particular slot.

Results and the SELT URN

View your result in myPTE when Pearson notifies you. Results are typically available in about two days, but that is not a guaranteed deadline. Leave time for processing and any further action before your application deadline.

The SELT URN is the secure reference used for UK government verification. Enter the reference requested in the visa application exactly as shown; do not substitute a booking number, a practice-test result or a screenshot. The government checks the secure result electronically.

GOV.UK’s general SELT guidance requires the approved result to have been awarded in the two years before the application. If relying on earlier English evidence under a route-specific provision, read that provision instead of assuming every previous result must be replaced. Our results guide explains access, sharing and validity checks.

Prepare for the English test, not just the visa threshold

Start with a diagnostic across all four skills. Write the minimum you need next to each ability, identify the weakest task patterns, and practise corrections before taking another full mock. If reading is above target but writing is below it, repeatedly checking the overall mock score will not tell you whether the actual problem improved.

Use Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation lessons alongside the rest of the Academic task library. Check that any practice platform includes the current format. Its score is training feedback, not a Home Office result.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take Academic UKVI at home?

No. Book the approved centre-based UKVI test. A remotely taken test or ordinary Academic booking does not become a SELT because its content is similar.

Is Academic UKVI harder than Academic?

No separate harder syllabus is specified: Pearson says the content, format and scoring are the same. Your required score is set by the receiving rule or institution.

Is a UKVI score enough for my course?

Only if it meets that course’s accepted product, overall score, skill minimums and evidence conditions. Visa-level English and course admission are separate checks.
