PTE exam: meaning, test types, format and scores

PTE stands for Pearson Test of English. It is a family of English-language tests, not one certificate accepted for every purpose. Start with the organisation receiving your result: its requirement determines the product, skills and score you need.

Compare the four centre-based PTE options covered here

PTE Academic

Academic English for institutions that accept it, and listed Australian and other approved uses. Check admission, visa and professional rules separately.

PTE Core

General English for Canadian immigration programs that accept it, including Express Entry. It is not the academic admission test.

PTE Academic UKVI

The four-skill Secure English Language Test (SELT) for UK applications requiring that evidence. It includes a SELT Unique Reference Number.

PTE Home

Speaking-and-listening SELTs at A1, A2 or B1 for UK routes accepting the booked level. These tests report pass or fail, not a 10–90 academic score.

For example, a Canadian college’s admission rule and an Express Entry application are different requirements. The Canada guide explains why an academic result cannot simply replace PTE Core for immigration.

Pearson also offers PTE Express, a separate online product for accepted US study applications. This guide’s centre-based comparison does not establish Express acceptance for your institution or a visa.

How the test experience works

For these centre-based tests, you use the centre’s computer, headphones and microphone. Spoken answers are recorded and written answers are typed. Some tasks use more than one skill—for example, listening to information and then producing a written response.

Academic and Academic UKVI share the academic test format. Core uses everyday, community and workplace English. Home tests speaking and listening only. Do not prepare for an essay simply because another Pearson test includes one.

Use the Academic format guide, Core guide or Home guide for product-specific detail. The overview’s job is to help you choose; individual question methods belong in the task preparation articles.

Scores: look beyond one overall number

Academic, Academic UKVI and Core use a 10–90 reporting scale. Home reports whether you passed the level booked. An Academic overall result is calculated from performance across the test; it is not a simple average you can reconstruct from the four reported skill scores.

There is no universal PTE passing score for admission or immigration. The receiving authority can require an overall result, minimums in particular skills, a named CEFR level or a CLB level. A score-comparison chart does not itself prove that a test is accepted.

Illustrative example—not an official course requirement: a course asks for 65 overall and at least 60 in every skill. A result of 68 overall with 58 in reading misses the reading condition. The stronger overall result does not cancel that shortfall.

For Canadian immigration, use IRCC’s PTE Core-to-CLB table for each skill, not an Academic-to-IELTS comparison. Read the results and score-report guide for sharing, validity and result checks.

Eligibility, identification and access arrangements

Separate permission to take a test from eligibility for a course or immigration program. Pearson’s registration, identity and consent rules govern the test appointment. A university or government separately decides whether you meet its admission or application criteria.

If you are under 18, check the current handbook for the product’s age and parental-consent requirements before creating a booking. If you need an accommodation, follow Pearson’s request process before choosing an appointment rather than assuming the centre can arrange it on arrival.

Check Pearson’s identification policy for the exact product and test country. The Academic handbook requires a valid, unexpired passport unless a listed country exception applies. A photocopy is not the original document. Do not assume that Aadhaar or another locally accepted document is valid PTE ID.

Match the booking details to the accepted ID. Resolve missing surnames, changed names or a passport held for a visa application before test day. Our India guide and booking checklist cover the practical next steps.

A safe order for choosing and booking

  1. Identify the exact application: course and intake, immigration program, visa route or professional registration.
  2. Open its official English requirement and write down the complete accepted test name.
  3. Record every required score or level, the permitted result age and how the result must be supplied.
  4. Resolve unclear or conflicting requirements with that authority.
  5. Use Pearson’s live booking system to choose the product, location and available date.

Do not choose a different test because its fee is lower or its appointment is sooner. Use the purpose finder if you need a starting route, then complete its official-check checklist.

PTE fees and dates in India

Fees and seats are live booking information. Check the selected product and India location in Pearson’s centre and fee finder. Confirm the total payable amount and the appointment confirmation rather than relying on an old price table or a generic monthly calendar.

Allow for travel, any required result-sharing time and your application deadline. The India exam-date guide explains how to search for an appointment, while the India centre directory helps you check the location.

Choose preparation that matches the test

Begin with a diagnostic task or practice test in the correct format, compare the result with your actual requirement, then identify specific weaknesses. A low listening result needs more investigation than simply repeating more full mocks: were you missing sounds, losing concentration, spelling incorrectly or running out of time?

Use the study-plan guide to turn those findings into a routine. Treat third-party practice scores as feedback, not a promised official result. Check Pearson’s preparation resources alongside our explanations and original exercises.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need PTE Academic or Core for Canada?

For Express Entry, IRCC specifies PTE Core. For study admission, check the institution’s requirement; an academic admission result and an immigration result serve different applications.

Is standard Academic the same booking as Academic UKVI?

No. They share test content and scoring, but the UKVI product provides the SELT reference required for relevant UK applications. Choose the product named in your official evidence instructions.

Can I take these PTE tests from home?

The Academic, Core, Academic UKVI and Home tests covered here are centre-based. Despite its name, PTE Home is not a home-proctored test. Pearson’s separate PTE Express product has a different delivery and acceptance context.

Does a high PTE score guarantee a visa or admission?

No. English evidence is only one requirement. Meeting it does not replace academic, financial, immigration, sponsorship or professional conditions.

Use the product handbook for test rules and the receiving organisation for acceptance. Where a general summary and a specific application rule differ, clarify the specific requirement before acting.
