Check the IRCC program—not just your overall score
For Express Entry, IRCC accepts PTE Core, not PTE Academic. Your program determines the minimum language level, and IRCC converts each skill separately into a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB).
Checked 28 October 2026. Follow the official rules for your application date.
This is an independent PTE Karo checklist. The linked institution or government authority sets the final requirements. This is not immigration advice.
Identify the program first
Use the IRCC language-test page for the approved test, program minimums and PTE Core conversion tables. If applying through a provincial or other immigration program, open that program’s own instructions too; an Express Entry rule does not automatically cover every PR stream.
For the Federal Skilled Worker Program, language is only one part of eligibility. Meeting an English threshold alone does not establish eligibility or guarantee an invitation.
Federal Skilled Worker’s first-official-language English minimum is CLB 7 throughout. Canadian Experience Class uses CLB 7 for TEER 0/1 and CLB 5 for TEER 2/3. Federal Skilled Trades instead requires CLB 5 in speaking/listening and CLB 4 in reading/writing. Write down the applicable program before comparing a report.
Read each skill in the official table
- Select PTE Core and the relevant Express Entry program on the IRCC page.
- Find the CLB level for speaking, listening, reading and writing separately.
- Compare every skill with the program minimum; do not average the scores.
- Keep program eligibility and invitation-ranking points as separate checks.
Check the dates at both stages
For Express Entry, the result must be less than two years old when you complete your profile and when you submit the permanent-residence application. Plan around the test date and renew the test if needed before a required stage.
For example, a test taken on 10 November 2024 is still less than two years old on 20 October 2026, but not on 20 November 2026. A profile completed before expiry does not make that same result acceptable for a later PR submission after expiry. This is a date illustration, not a recommended application timetable.
Worked check: one skill below a minimum
Take an illustrative Core report with Listening 40, Reading 44, Writing 51 and Speaking 50. The official ranges place the first three at CLB 5 but speaking at CLB 4. It does not meet a requirement of CLB 5 in all four abilities. Speaking needs at least 51 to enter the CLB 5 range; a stronger overall result cannot compensate.
Use the complete Core-to-CLB table to check your own four scores, then compare them with the actual program minimum. A correct conversion is only one check: it does not establish work-history, education, admissibility, nomination or invitation eligibility.
Prepare the result record for your application
- Exact immigration program and, if applicable, the separate provincial stream and official instructions.
- Test product, test date and the four component scores copied from the official report.
- The CLB range for each ability, checked against the current IRCC table.
- The result identifiers requested by the actual application; do not substitute a booking reference.
- Intended profile and PR submission dates, with a repeat validity check at the later stage.
Resolve discrepancies before submission
If your name, test date or result details differ between documents, use Pearson’s official support and the application instructions to resolve the discrepancy. Do not edit a score report or guess a replacement reference. The results guide explains official access and sharing.
If your purpose is university admission or a post-graduation work permit rather than PR, return to the Canada guide for the separate evidence checks. Do not apply this Express Entry checklist to every Canadian application merely because IRCC is involved.
Continue with the right guide
Use the PTE Core guide to understand the test and the Canada guide to separate immigration from study. Final decisions belong to IRCC and, where relevant, the provincial program.
