UK study & work: the four-skill SELT route
Choose PTE Academic UKVI when your UK study or work application requires a four-skill Secure English Language Test (SELT). It provides the SELT reference used to check your result.
Checked 28 October 2026. Follow the official rules for your application date.
Studying in the UK
The Student route requires English at B1 for below-degree study and B2 for degree-level study or above. At degree level or above, an eligible Higher Education Provider can assess English itself and can ask for a different test.
Ask the university or college which evidence it will record for your course and sponsorship. Standard PTE Academic can be suitable where the institution accepts it and a SELT is not required. This route is specifically for applications that do require a four-skill SELT.
Working in the UK
Skilled Worker guidance requires B2 English for new applications under the current rules. Different provisions apply to some people who held this visa before 8 January 2026. Other work routes have their own requirements; an employer’s preference is not a substitute for the visa rule.
PTE Academic UKVI tests speaking, listening, reading and writing. PTE Home tests only speaking and listening, so it is not the test for a four-skill requirement.
If you had Skilled Worker permission before 8 January 2026 and are extending or updating it, GOV.UK specifies the B1 transition and says English does not need to be proved again. It separately addresses switches from Health and Care Worker. Do not book another exam without checking the actual permission and evidence history.
Confirm the route before booking
- Identify the exact visa route and whether this is a first application, switch or extension.
- Confirm the evidence method, CEFR level and required skills on GOV.UK.
- Ask your study sponsor to confirm the evidence needed for your course.
- Check the approved Pearson test, required component scores and approved location.
Turn the requirement into four score targets
Pearson’s visa table maps B1 to at least 43 in each of the four skills and B2 to at least 59 in each. These are SELT evidence thresholds; a course can set higher admission requirements.
As an illustrative B2 check, Listening 63, Reading 62, Writing 58 and Speaking 66 fails the writing minimum. A high overall result does not replace that missing point. Record all four targets when preparing, not only an overall target.
Plan the test after the evidence route is clear
Academic UKVI shares Academic content, format and scoring. Use the current Academic format guide and task resources once you have confirmed the UKVI booking. A Home pass is not a shorter route to a four-skills result, and Core’s Canadian use does not establish UK acceptance.
If testing from India, check the India guide for local fee and ID planning and verify an approved UKVI location. Work backwards from the receiving deadline with time for processing, verification and a possible retake. Follow the booking rules; do not treat a typical results time as guaranteed.
